It is done by taking scalers to level off the calculus from your teeth below the gums. Calculus is the hardened, calcified plaque that can only be removed that opening.
Expect some soreness. Just take Advil or Motrin and within a week or so you should be fine!
I had a scale done a few years back because I hadn't be to the dentist in something like 5 years previous to that. I figured that since it's simply water, it wouldn't hurt. I be wrong! That scaling really be uncomfortable. I'm not trying to alarm you, but like the previous personage said, take some Motrin, Tylenol or Aleve back you go to the dentist. As far as root planning go, I'm not too sure. In either defence, good luck.
Scaling and Root Planning also know as a open scale is done one quadrant at a time(from the pay for tooth to the middle of the mouth. The hygienest or dr will numb the area later once it is numb they will use special scaling instruments. They may also use an insturment that sprays wet and vibrates to remove the hardened plaque. The removal of the plaque is going to be mostly below the gumline that cannot be removed beside a normal cleaning or brushing and flossing. you will more afterwards likely own bleeding durning the procedure but you shouldn't feel anything. You will own some tenderness and swelling for a few days afterwards but you'll be fine. Just bring motrin or tylenol and that should help.
Its done a moment ago like a weighty cleaning, they gave me novacaine first, and they verbs a little deeper below the gumline. It wasn't fruitless, not even very sore afterwards, newly a little tender for a time or so, but nothing to be concerned roughly.
